Dinner the second night in Kyoto

After we finished watching the cormorant fishing show, we walked about the city trying to find a place to eat.

At first, we were looking for a place that served delicious noodles. We saw some places, but they didn't look delicious enough.

Then we tried to eat in a place that had a nice view of the river. They were closed.

Then we found the Arashiyama Kushi Tei Kushi Katsu Restaurant.

Here is their drink menu:

This is what Doreen ordered (first item on the left):

Cold saki.

Kushi Katsu is a Kyoto specialty, and it is a deep fried skewer. Essentially State Fair food - food on a stick, though we didn't know that when we went it.

It turns out that this place was really quite good. When you sit down you just get a choice of how many skewers you want to eat. I think we chose the 12 item menu.

Most of them look the same (they are deep fried things on skewers, after all) but the list goes something like this:

Plate with sauces - hot, vinegar, salt, sweet

Burdock root

Salmon with roe

Pork (left) and Yam Cake

Shrimp with Rice cracker crust and crab claw

Turnip!

Delicious noodles

Chestnut

Eggplant

Takeshi Yawata, the owner

Devil's tongue.

cake!

There was one more thing after the cake - a scallop. But it looked just like all the other stuff, so use your imagination.

We took the tram back, and then the subway back to the hotel. Doreen always does an excellent job of scoping out the public transportation. It is usually cheaper than a taxi, and in most cases it is also faster.

It was still raining when we got back to the hotel, but we had umbrellas.
